A Summer We Will Remember
Hello,
How are you? Is your summer all that you'd hope for? Or like me have you had some unexpected event
occur? Most of you know that I've been baking cookies weekly for the past 5 years for Bryce and his
classmates. This past year Miss Chan, my granddaughter said, "Well Grandma Sweetheart, will you
bake cookies for me too?" Of course I agreed. As the school year ended I was thinking how I'd enjoy
having a summer free of baking cookies at midnight or o'dark-thirty and dashing them to each school
between my client's sessions. Yes, I was telling myself how I was going to take the summer off from
baking cookies and have some fun.
The last day of school Bryce received notice from the Congressional Junior National Young Leaders
Conference saying that he had been nominated by his teacher for outstanding academics, leadership,
and community service contributions; they accepted the nomination and invited Bryce to attend the 6-
day conference in Washington D. C. this fall. (I later learned nationwide there are hundreds of
thousands of kids nominated and less than 1% is invited and Bryce is one of those!!)
I viewed this as a rite of passage for Bryce so won't you know I jumped in with both feet to help him.
We started brainstorming how we could generate the funds for him to attend. I felt it is a necessity for
Bryce to be an intricate part of generating the funds as he's learned a lot about short cuts and handouts.
I bet you'll never guess our main source of fund-raising - yes it's true - we decided to bake cookies and
sell them. This child will never forget the summer when he was 12 and neither will I.
